Thoughts on Semantics... Generally Speaking

Now I know that I'm just starting my linguistic journey and I know that I'm not the most studious person, but some things are very apparent about this study.  IT IS VERY CONVOLUTED.  I should probably say complicated, because it probably makes more sense than I give credit.  It's just as easy as that, though.  It's so nuanced that my perceptual muscles are fatigued just thinking at the prospect of understanding it.  The Mac dictionary defines convoluted as such:
convoluted |ˈkänvəˌloōtid|
adjective(esp. of an argument, story, or sentence) extremely complex and difficult to follow : its convoluted narrative encompasses all manner of digressions.• chiefly technical intricately folded, twisted, or coiled : walnuts come inhard and convoluted shells
But I have this intuitive feeling that convoluted means more than just very complex.  It seems to mean more than just very, it seems to mean overly complex.  I mean something that is complicated may simply be complicated, not that it is by someone's doing.  So I choose to call Semantics complicated because it is naturally complex... not because someone overcomplicated a more simplistic matter.
I digress.  By the way, I can't figure how to stop the indent after that copy-paste I did... Oh well, just understand this is not intentionally indented.  What are your thoughts?  That is, if anyone's out there, what are his or her thoughts on the subject of semantics?  Also I have nothing against using a singular they, I just thought some people would be frustrated by it.
